Underlying Causes of PMS

Many women deal with debilitating PMS every month. They are told by their doctor that this is normal and to just take non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) like ibuprofen or aspirin. Not only does this refrain from solving the problem, but it can also exacerbate the issue.

NSAIDs can destroy the stomach lining, contributing to mucosal barrier damage that can lead to conditions like leaky gut, SIBO and dysbiosis. Damage to the epithelial cells, villi and microvilli that make up the mucosal barrier disrupts the production of diamine oxidase (DAO). A lack of DAO, an enzyme produced in the gastrointestinal tract to break down histamine, reduces the degradation of histamine and can lead to allergy symptoms including runny nose, sneezing, congestion, itching, skin reactions, headaches, migraines and digestive issues. Low levels of DAO are also linked to PMS.

DAO levels and Intestinal Barrier Integrity can be measured with Functional labs using dried blood in the convenience of our own home. With proper diet, lifestyle and supplements, a healthy mucosal barrier can be reconstructed, thus restoring the optimal production of DAO.

Low progesterone is also a cause of PMS. Progesterone helps to balance out estrogen and is essential for preventing estrogen dominance. Progesterone and other hormones can easily be measured from a person’s saliva with Functional fabs. Bio-identical hormones such as progesterone, in combination with dietary/lifestyle modifications and natural supplements, can be used to restore optimal hormone levels.
